What is an Eternity Wedding Band?

Here is a great description from Wikipedia of eternity wedding bands that accurately describes what an eternity wedding band looks like.

An eternity ring, also known as an infinity ring, is a woman’s ring comprising a band of precious metal (usually gold) set with a continuous line of identically cut gemstones (usually diamonds) to symbolize neverending love, usually given by a spouse to their wife on the occasion of a significant anniversary, typically after 50 or more years of marriage. Because the presence of stones all the way around the eternity ring can make it cumbersome to wear, the alternative is to have the stones across the face of the ring only. This is sometimes referred to as a “half-eternity” ring rather than a “full” eternity ring. Wikipedia

Pros of Eternity Wedding Bands

While there are more cons to eternity rings (keep reading below) than there are pros, the advantages are enough to make many women choose eternity wedding bands.

No spinning. One of the most annoying things about any ring is they are constantly spinning. It can be very difficult to keep a ring from spinning because you need it loose enough to get over your knuckle when putting the ring on or taking it off.

It always looks gorgeous. Since an eternity ring looks the same all the way around, it doesn’t matter if the ring spins, it will always look the same. Additionally, having diamonds all the way around means there will always be sparkle and shine visible!

Cons of Eternity Wedding Bands

As beautiful as eternity wedding bands are, there are quite a few cons that keep many women front getting on for their ring set.

Risk losing diamonds. Since there are diamonds all the way around, you have more risk of losing diamonds. Sometimes the prongs simply wear out which loosens the hold on the diamonds. Other times it might be that one of the diamonds gets caught on something and wears out over time.

Can’t be resized. Eternity rings have stones all the way around the ring. Due to the fact that resizing requires cutting the band and adding or removing some of the metal means eternity rings can’t be resized. There is no exposed metal to work with. Read more about resizing wedding rings.

More expensive. Due to the number of diamonds on the wedding band, eternity wedding bands tend to be much more expensive than other wedding bands with fewer or no diamonds.

They can be uncomfortable. Eternity wedding bands that have prongs tend to rub on the second and fourth fingers which can be irritating. Additionally, eternity wedding bands tend to be thicker, which makes them feel more awkward and uncomfortable on your finger.

Eternity Wedding Band Alternatives

There are some really great options for rings that are similar to eternity wedding bands in appearance and solve some of the cons to eternity rings.

You can get wedding bands that look just like an eternity ring from the top but the diamonds actually only go halfway or 3/4 of the way around the band, like the ring below.

Another option is to get a ring where the stones are in a channel going halfway or 3/4 of the way around the band. This band also happens to be bent so that it goes around your main stone.

You could also get a wedding band that simply has 5 or sick stones on the top with the rest of the band being solid. This is a beautiful option as well.
